Then there's the oddest thing about the set. They really limit the possibilities of incorporating the models into a western themed town. Likely added to mimic a child's playset, rather than a TV soundstage, and to add color to the otherwise dull color scheme. Firstly the blue windows are an original choice. How can you resist a song that describes "Jessie, the Yodelin' Cowgirl" as the "epiglottis goddess"? Some of the new songs are better than others, but the album as a whole strikes a nice balance between an affectionate re-creation of the cowboy sound and a campy send-up of it. Filling out the disc are new versions of Newman's "Toy Story" song, "You've Got a Friend in Me," Buck Owens's "Act Naturally" and the traditional "Home on the Range," plus six new tunes written by the Riders themselves. Lasseter became so infatuated with his fictional TV show that he commissioned a whole album of songs, even though only the theme song appeared in "Toy Story 2." Thus, Riders in the Sky have released "Woody's Roundup," which recycles just one number (the title track) from the soundtrack. To write the theme song, he tapped Randy "Rider in the Rain" Newman, and to sing it Lasseter picked today's leading cowboy-music group, Riders in the Sky. To explain this back story, filmmaker John Lasseter re-created the TV show, "Woody's Roundup," with all the detail of an obsessive, middle-aged nostalgist.
The collector wants the Woody the Cowboy figure because this character from a 1950s TV show has become an extremely valuable piece of memorabilia. In last year's delightful animated film "Toy Story 2," a young boy's favorite toy is stolen by an obsessive, middle-aged toy collector (who suspiciously resembles many record-collecting rock critics).
